Switch off that TV!

Here’s more reason to turn off that little black box of yours, but can they do a study on the effect of facing the computer screen also?? I think it’ll probably be more beneficial..

“Click Off the TV, and Burn More Calories

By RONI CARYN RABIN, December 22, 2009

Just push yourself away from the television. You will burn more calories.

Overweight adults who cut their viewing in half for three weeks used about 120 more calories a day than a similar group of viewers, who continued watching five hours a day on average, a small research trial has found.

While 120 calories may not sound like much, it is equivalent to the number of calories burned in a one-mile walk, said Jennifer J. Otten, lead author of the paper, published in the Dec. 14-28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

“We need a longer-term study to see if this would be an intervention that would help with weight loss, or even weight gain prevention,” Dr. Otten said. “But if you add it up over time, it’s equivalent to walking eight miles a week. Over a year, it might help prevent weight gain of 12 pounds.”

To carry out the trial, the researchers recruited 36 overweight and obese adults who watched at least three hours of TV a day and randomly assigned 20 of them to cut that time in half. The reduction was enforced through an electronic lock-out device. All of the participants wore armband accelerometers that measured their movements, Dr. Otten said.

Unlike children whose television time is cut, the adults did not eat less. But they spent more time in light physical activities or sedentary activities that burn more calories than watching television does — reading, playing board games or scrapbooking.”

Oh, and since they’re doing it, might as well tell us how much we stand to save in terms of electricity bills!!
Its all about the GO GREEN movement right?? Hahah..

Christmas gathering and Games

After a wonderful church service listening to beautiful music played on guitar and harp, the adults busied themselves distributing gifts to the little ones!

Although there wasn’t enough to go around, i felt that its a really wonderful opportunity to teach the kids that christmas is about giving and sharing. This could not be achieved if everyone got their little bag of snacks.

A gathering planned by Jan and some games to lighten the mood made for a wonderful gathering after, where all the “kids at heart” let their hair loose and worked themselves into the festive spirit.

Introductory Games

After some serious laughter and embarrassing games in the open, the group chatted the day away over dinner and movies!

Did you spend time with the people that you loved this holiday??

Team Games and a Whole lot of Learning

The games that involve a lot of social aspects brings the most joy.
Teaching the NCC kids about fitness is really a different experience,
they will make you feel like a kid again

social fitness at work

some wheel barrow, some piggy back and some tandem hops,
all these plus some competition,
and you’ll have lots of fun, laughter and a serious workout!

Of course, fysike is never just about physical fitness.
Sharing session are incorporated into the program to highlight points that we want to bring awareness to,
placing our faith in the minds of our future leaders.

sharing session on shoes selection

racing?? no!! reaction exercises!!

sharing sessions, limbering exercises and circuits

Lastly, what better way to develop leadership skills and their understanding than having them lead and show their peers!
its a whole lot of guided trial and practice that reinforces the learning.

Social Sunday

Sunday is the day where we take a break from the hectic work, and seek spiritual well being. As this blog is not one on religion, i will not dwelve too much into the nitty gritty details. Apart from the usual communion, a hearty and soupy lunch, it was the company of a few friends to the movies to complete the day. You may wonder, “what has this got to do for fitness?” well, here’s your answer!

  1. All work and no play makes one a boring person
  2. Fitness is about balance
  3. A good athlete knows when to rest, and when to push
  4. Social Fitness is as important as any other aspect of fitness
  5. Rest is good, and necessary

Anyway, we did get some workout after all. some frisbee throwing practice at East Coast Park marked the end of the jam packed sunday and we all ended our weekend, rejuvenated for the challenges that comes in the new week! Thank god for Sabbath!

Aqua Jogging, the fysike way!

Aqua Jogging

We know that the benefit of aqua jogging is plenty, but at fysike, we are not contented.
The questions on our mind has always been:

  • How do we get more out of our fitness pursuit?
  • How do we harness the values of holistic fitness?
  • How do we leverage on the indirect learning?

In this instance, we discuss on the infusion of cohesion and fun into aqua jogging to make a good workout even better!

Step 1. Bring lots of friends to your aqua jogging session

Step 2. Have some ice-breaker games to mix the group up, preferably with lots of water splashing and laughter

Step 3. Make sure you think of some workout that requires you to work with friends. These may include formation of different shapes in the water, freeze on sight in the water, push the wall (hand to hand, pushing each other forward while aqua jogging), catch the leader etc.

Step 4. Round up the workout with some games like stop the bullet, where the bigger group needs to form the wall that stops certain selected bullets from reaching the opposite side. Participants will have to hold themselves together with their arms inter-locked.

Step 5. Discuss and share on the leanings, especially the indirect ones that the lesson brought up

Take your plunge now, jump into the pool for a smashing good time!!
